Janus form helmet mask from the Ekoi culture of Nigeria. Ceremonially used, such pieces are worn during initiation & funereal rites, & other rituals.
Description:
Helmet mask in two sections, with Janusform face on both sides. Crescent—shaped ears, large knobbed protruding forehead painted reddish brown. Flat hat—shaped headdress, with two birds perched on each side of helmet. Short thick wedge—shaped nose, protruding almond—shaped eyes. Protruding open mouth exposing teeth, protruding chin. Two sides attached by leather thongs, near ears on each side.
