This figure is also known as a kabwelulu. In Luba, a kabwelulu is used during initiation rituals. The individual would place a secret item in the gourd bring out the memory and experience of the initiation, the object is said to acquire power over time.
Description:
Wooden finial on gourd base, large head with round bulgy shell eyes, feathered headdress. Short nose, oval—shaped mouth, thick cylindrical neck, flat shoulders. Boneless bent arms carved close to body, protruding navel with shell inlays on chest and navel. Black gourd with pointed bottom, black patina over entire surface.
