A carved batebo figure by the Lobi peoples represents a Thil, which is an invisible and bodiless being endowed with superhuman powers and abilities. The figure is used to control and manage events over which humans have no power, such as sickness and death. Each figure is carved to convey a particular demeanor with its gestures and is kept in a household shrine.

Standing female figure with outstretched arms forming cross—shaped figure. Large head, thin straight nose, large crescent—shaped open mouth, sloped slit eyes. Small ears, combed hair, cylindrical neck, small female breasts. Long cylindrical body, boneless bent arms, black patina over entire surface.
