Some disagreement concerning the correct identification of the piece. Hand written note: "According to Douglas Dawson, this is a pot holder, which was half buried in the ground, and upon which, were placed pots. He described it as not being all that good of a piece. — Author: Unknown.

The piece does display color changes, roughly half of the way up. From an orange clay color, to a much darker color. Maybe from weathering or possibly the result of smoke or fire.
Description:
Buff—colored clay drum with a long cylindrical body, wide trumpet flanged rim. Face with engraved features of high arched eyebrows, conical bulgy eyes, small linear nose. Crescent—shaped mouth, linear geometric designs under the mouth, extending down near the foot which tampers in slightly from body, with rolled rim at foot, black on upper part.
